New beginnings are a good place for feng shui. Feng shui has so many small ways to bring harmony to your life. Add "Use more feng shui." to your list of goals for 2007.

The beginning of each new year brings an onslaught of promises. We promise ourselves to do better, to lose weight, to stop smoking, to be nicer, to make more money. Sometimes we can make such lofty promises that, when we don’t keep them, we feel that we have failed. Let feng shui be a part of your new year this year.

One way to feel that you really can accomplish what you promise yourself you will do (or not do) is to make tiny promises, or take tiny steps toward your goals. (Semantics can be a way in which we program ourselves to fail. Instead of making resolutions that can end up having you feel as if you fall short, set goals, some things to aim for.) If you set a goal for yourself to implement feng shui into your life in one new way a month, you have found a very easy way to make huge changes in your life.

The concept of feng shui is such that you can start small and see big results. If you’re new to feng shui, perhaps you feel a bit nervous about trying it. Don’t worry. For example, if you don’t like where you put a windchime, you can always move it back where it was or take it down completely. You just might see a positive change in your life, though, soon after you put one up.

Try hanging a windchime right outside your front door. Choose one with a pleasing sound to your ear. Leave it up for a few days. See if you notice any changes. Maybe not right away. Keep it up for three months and see if you notice more joy coming to you via your front door. Good news could come to you in a letter. A close friend may visit. Keep an open mind and an open heart to the changes that are possible.

Another small change you can make to ring in the new year is to place your birthstone in an area of your home where you want to feel relaxed. Historically, different stones carry different characteristics, for instance amethyst for calming. But one belief is that each birthstone brings particularly peaceful chi to a person born in that month. We are different in many ways, including how we react to certain stones. So a stone that brings calming to one person, may not work as well for someone else born at a different time of the year.

Give yourself a chance to get used to feng shui. This year could turn out to be your best one yet. All it takes is one tiny change.
