Both Sacred Geometry and Feng Shui are fundamentally mathematical explanations of how the universe operates and how we can harness these natural powers to live in balance and harmony. Based on designs inherent in nature, both concepts allow the student and teacher alike to glimpse into the unknowable, possibly bringing us closer toward the ultimate spiritual journey.
Feng Shui and the Magic Square
The Luo Shu - Feng Shui has been seen as far back as 4,000 years in ancient Chinese grave sites and monuments. Based on the Luo Shu, Feng Shui includes an ancient “numerology system consisting of a three by three grid with a sequence of numbers said, in myth, to have been discovered on a giant tortoise shell. It is also called the magic square because any three sectors add up to fifteen along any diagonal, vertical, or horizontal line”, according to the International Feng Shui Guild.
The Luo Shu, out of which the Feng Shui Compass was created, is said to always move in a fixed pattern. This pattern of energy is repeated over time and can calculate the fortunes of a person or a building in a certain year. Each area of the Luo Shu represents a compass direction and the energy of our journey through life, or the Tao.
Numerology of Birthdates - Each person has a magic number associated with their birthdate. Based on your magic number, you will find the most auspicious directions in which to place your bed, desk and chair.
Even buildings have “birthdates” and the magic number can be calculated to see if the energy of a prospective home is beneficial to your prosperity and happiness.
Likened to the flow of water in a river, when people are in the Tao, or appropriate flow of chi, they will have prosperity and happiness. When they are not in the Tao, working against the flow, they will experience hardship.
Sacred Geometry and Divine Proportions
Discovered as far back as 2,500 years ago and perhaps, older than that, Sacred Geometry has fascinated mathematicians and philosophers alike. Also known as Divine Proportion, The Golden Mean, Golden Section, and Golden Ratio, “The power of the golden section to create harmony arises from its unique capacity to unite different parts of a whole so that each preserves its own identity, and yet blends into the greater pattern of a single whole,” explains Gyorgy Doczi in "The Power of Limits. "
The mathematical ratio described as Phi, is evident in the Golden Spiral, the Golden Rectangle, and the Golden Triangle. These proportions of Sacred Geometry grace the natural elements of sea shells, the growth patterns in roses, tree branches, the DNA double-helix, weather systems, from the patterns in our fingerprints to the galaxies of the universe.
Aspects of Sacred Geometry have been discovered by the Egyptians and Greeks, by Plato, Euclid, and Fibonacci to Leonardo de Vinci and the architects of the great European cathedrals.
