San He or Three Combinations System of Feng Shui includes Eight Mansions or East/West, Water Dragons, Mountain Dragons, and Environmental Feng Shui teachings.

The Three Combinations, also called San He, system is considered to be the oldest school of Feng Shui. Among the major practices used in San He Feng Shui is observing landforms and applying the qualities of the 4 celestial animals to the site being analyzed. One of the most important landforms is mountains: both real mountains and structures associated with mountains, such as high buildings. Another is bodies of water: actual rivers, lakes, and seas, plus roads and pathways as symbolic representations of water.

Eight Mansions or East/West School of Feng Shui

One of the most known representations of the San He system is Eight Mansions Feng Shui. Eight Mansions, often referred to as East/West, teaching of Feng Shui determines favorable or unfavorable directions for each individual on the basis of his or her Gua (Kua) number. This number is calculated from the person’s date and time of birth, and determines to which group – East or West – the personality belongs. The Eight Mansions teaching also pays much attention to the location of front door, stove, staircases, and the overall orientation of the building.

So, while San Yan system pays more attention to natural Bagua areas of the premise, the San He School places greater emphasis on individual person’s favorable directions.

Water and Mountain Dragons Teachings

The major idea of Water Dragons method is creating a Water Dragon to be located in a certain area of the house and bring extreme wealth to the owner. At the same time, a wrong location or implementation may lead to absolutely opposite results.

While Water Dragons system aims at locating bodies of water in right directions, Mountain Dragons teaching involves representations of mountains to be located in certain favorable directions. Water is supposed to bring extreme wealth, and mountains are responsible for the person’s well-being.

Environmental Feng Shui

The task of Environmental Feng Shui is harmonizing the space by means of bringing balance into the arrangement of 5 Feng Shui elements. This Feng Shui teaching is based on the idea that the environment should be supportive and comfortable for the people living in it. This includes structures surrounding the building, as well as inner arrangement of the dwelling. Environmental Feng Shui practitioners analyze the existing environment, and, if there is a need to improve it, arrange the representations of elements in favorable cycles that enhance the natural qualities of positive energy.

In general, the greatest difference between San He and San Yan Schools of Feng Shui is that the Three Combinations system pays much attention to landforms. The followers of this teaching believe that what surrounds the house is not less important than what is inside. Therefore, the Three Combinations School can be used when planning the construction, because it can advise on the most favorable directions and forms for a building.
